Nutrition

What is actually in them

23.3gProtein
14.6gFibre
6.4gOmega-3

Per 100 g. A 30 g serving — two to three tablespoons, which is what most people sprinkle without thinking about it — works out at about 7 g of protein and 4.4 g of fibre. At Rs 350 the pack holds roughly eight of those, so a serving costs about Rs 42.

Directions

Three ways in

Kushiva Organic Hemp Seeds 250 g kraft pouch standing in dappled afternoon sunlight, hemp leaf illustration on the label
  1. 01
    Sprinkle

Straight onto curd, poha, upma, salad, a smoothie bowl, dal, anything. No prep. This is the one most people stick with.

  2. 02
    Roast

Dry pan, low flame, two minutes, keep them moving. They pop slightly and go deeply nutty. Good with salt as a snack.

  3. 03
    Grind

Pulse them into a coarse powder and stir it into atta, batter or a chutney. The fibre goes in with it.

You do not need to soak them. Hemp seeds are not chia, and the shell is soft enough to chew.

Whole or hulled

Seeds or hearts?

Nearly every hemp product in India is sold as hemp hearts — the soft inner kernel, with the shell stripped off. These are the whole seed. Neither is better; they are different things, and nobody tells you that.

Hulled hearts

Higher — hulling removes weight and adds a step

Short version: hearts give you more protein per gram, whole seeds give you roughly three times the fibre and the crunch, and they cost less because nothing has been removed.

Where hemp leads

Against the other seeds in your kitchen

Three things hemp carries more of than chia or flax — including the two minerals people most often go out and buy as supplements.

Protein per 100 g

  • Hemp23.3 g
  • Flax18 g
  • Chia16 g

Magnesium per 100 g

  • Hemp700 mg
  • Flax392 mg
  • Chia335 mg

Zinc per 100 g

  • Hemp9.9 mg
  • Chia4.6 mg
  • Flax4.3 mg
HempEat it as it comes. No soaking, no grinding.
ChiaSoak it, or it gels in your mouth.
FlaxGrind it, or it passes through whole.

Chia and flax do carry more omega-3 and more fibre — that is their job. Keep all three if you like. This is what hemp brings that they do not: the most protein of the three, the minerals, and the only one you can eat straight out of the bag.

Protein for this pack is its own declared panel. The comparison figures are reference values for each seed from USDA FoodData Central, where the hemp entry is hulled seed; the mineral gap is wide enough that whole seed stays first. Minerals are not declared on this pack.

Good to know

Before you add it to the cart

These are hemp seeds, sold as food. They are not a medicine, they need no prescription, and they will not get you high — which makes them the one thing on this site you can buy without talking to a doctor first. Store the pouch closed, somewhere cool and dry, and finish it within twelve months of the packing date. Best in an airtight jar once it is open, because the oil in any seed turns eventually.

Origin

Where these come from

The seeds are grown and processed in Uttarakhand and packed for E Hemp Stores Pvt. Ltd. in Delhi. Uttarakhand was the first Indian state to licence industrial hemp cultivation, which is why most hemp food in this country starts there.

Hemp seed became a legal food ingredient in India in November 2021, when national food standards were notified for hemp seed, hemp seed oil and hemp seed flour. Those standards cap THC at 5 mg per kg in food and CBD at 75 mg per kg — which is the regulator's way of saying a hemp seed is a seed, not a drug.

Questions

Common questions

Will hemp seeds get me high?

No. The compounds that do that sit in the flowering tops of the plant, not in the seed. The food standard caps THC in hemp seed food at 5 mg per kilogram, and you would have to eat an absurd quantity to reach anything at all. People eat these for breakfast.

Are hemp seeds legal in India?

Hemp seed is permitted as a food. National food standards for hemp seed, hemp seed oil and hemp seed flour were notified in November 2021, and the NDPS Act's definition of cannabis covers the flowering and fruiting tops rather than the seed.

What is the difference between hemp seeds and hemp hearts?

Hearts are the same seed with the shell taken off. That leaves them softer and higher in protein per gram, but it removes most of the fibre — roughly 14.6 g per 100 g here against about 4 g for hearts — and it costs more, because you are paying for weight that was thrown away.

Do I need to soak or grind them?

No. The shell is soft enough to chew, so they go straight on food. Grind them if you want the fibre hidden inside roti or a batter, but it is optional in a way it is not with flax.

How much should I eat?

Two to three tablespoons, about 30 g, is the usual serving and what the pack is portioned around. This is a food, so treat it like one: there is no dose.

How many servings in a pack?

About eight at 30 g each, so roughly Rs 42 a serving. Two people sprinkling it on breakfast will go through a pouch in a fortnight.

What do they taste like?

Mild and nutty, close to a sunflower seed, with a crunch from the shell. They are not bitter and they do not taste grassy. Roasting them for two minutes makes the nuttiness much louder.

Is this the same as the other cannabis products on this site?

No, and it is worth being clear about it. Everything else here is an AYUSH-licensed preparation that needs a doctor's review before it ships. This is a packet of seeds from the food aisle. Different product, different law, different checkout.

Can children eat them?

They are an ordinary food, so yes, in the way any seed is — ground into something for small children, since whole seeds and small children are a choking question rather than a hemp question. Anyone with a seed or nut allergy should treat these like any other seed.

How do I store them?

Cool, dry, closed. Tip them into an airtight jar once the pouch is open. Best before twelve months from the packing date printed on the back.

Kushiva Organic Hemp Seeds are a food product. They are not a medicine and are not offered to treat, cure or prevent any condition. Nutrition figures are those declared on the pack.
