Cannabis oil vs CBD oil vs hemp seed oil in India.

Three names that get mixed up constantly. Here is what each one actually is, how Indian regulation treats them, and how to tell what you are buying.

In short: cannabis (leaf extract) oil is a whole-leaf preparation containing the plant's naturally occurring compounds, used in AYUSH-licensed, prescription-based formulations in India. CBD oil usually refers to products centred on one cannabinoid, cannabidiol. Hemp seed oil is pressed from seeds and contains no meaningful cannabinoids at all — it is a food/cosmetic oil. Many Indian brands label whole-plant products "CBD oil" because that is what people search, so always read what is actually in the bottle.

The three, side by side

  • Cannabis leaf extract oil — made from cannabis leaves (known as vijaya in Ayurveda); full-spectrum, meaning the plant's natural compound profile is retained. In India: AYUSH-licensed pathways, prescription-based supply, batch testing with a Certificate of Analysis. This is what Kushiva makes.
  • CBD oil — centred on cannabidiol, often as an isolate or "broad spectrum" preparation. The term is used loosely in India; several AYUSH-licensed brands sell whole-plant extracts under the CBD label because it is the familiar search term.
  • Hemp seed oil — cold-pressed from seeds; nutritionally interesting (fatty acids) but effectively cannabinoid-free. If a product's ingredient list says "hemp seed oil" only, it is not a cannabinoid product, whatever the marketing implies.

How to tell what you are actually buying

  • Source material — leaf/whole-plant extract, isolated cannabinoid, or seed?
  • Licence — is the manufacturer operating under AYUSH or an equivalent approved framework?
  • Prescription — legitimate cannabinoid formulations in India are supplied against a prescription; a product nobody gates is telling you something.
  • Certificate of Analysis — batch testing that states what is in the bottle. Ask for it; a serious seller has it. (Ours is available on request.)
  • Stated strength — a real formulation declares mg/ml or mg per piece, so a doctor can prescribe a measurable amount.

Gummies vs oil: the format question

The same extract can come as a dropper oil (finer control of small amounts) or pre-measured gummies (fixed amount per piece, slower onset through digestion). Neither is universally better — the sensible choice is whatever the reviewing doctor advises for you. More on this in the gummies FAQ and oil FAQ.

What about legality?

Legal treatment in India depends on the plant part, the preparation, and the supply pathway — not on which of these three names the label uses. Our India Cannabis Law FAQ walks through the NDPS Act and the AYUSH route in plain language.

Frequently asked questions

Is cannabis oil the same as CBD oil?
Not strictly. Cannabis leaf extract oil is a whole-leaf, full-spectrum preparation; CBD oil usually centres on one cannabinoid. In India the terms are used loosely, so check the source material, licence, and Certificate of Analysis rather than the name.
Does hemp seed oil contain CBD or THC?
No meaningful amount. Hemp seed oil is pressed from seeds and is a food/cosmetic oil. It is not a cannabinoid product.
Why do Indian brands call whole-plant extracts "CBD oil"?
Because "CBD oil" is the term people search. Several AYUSH-licensed brands sell full-spectrum vijaya (cannabis) extracts under the CBD label. The label matters less than what the Certificate of Analysis says is inside.
Which one does Kushiva sell?
Full-spectrum cannabis leaf extract - as dropper oils, cola gummies, and a concentrated extract - AYUSH-certified, lab-tested, and supplied after medical review.
